It was of course our invention. We the people created him. Stout, unshaven, long haired and dressed in a ‘not so stylish’ red suit with a buckle that would make a bikie gang happy. He lands on your roof, enters your home by subterfuge, eats your bickies, drinks your milk and shoots through leaving only gifts for the whole family. Wonderful, harmless, benevolent, wishful and special.

For some, it’s time for a well earned break. For others it’s no doubt the busiest time of the year. In any case, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has spent the time reading our blogs and especially those that have made the effort to contribute and comment online.
Marketers have created some of the world’s best throw away lines, “Less is more”: “Sweeter, sweeter the more you repeata” etc. All with deft levels of meaning, mostly good but all very vague. One such term, actually it’s an acronym, is KISS.
The acronym KISS [‘Keep it simple stupid’] is now officially under review by me. I’ve learned it’s a contradiction in terms! It’s a gaff! A clanger – a true oxymoron! It’s clever and idiotic at the same time. You see keeping things simple is bloody complicated and no one understands that any more.
For the last few months Lee and I have been talking it up about going for a mountain bike together. So finally last weekend Lee and I decided to hit the Ferguson Valley hills on our mountain bikes, only to find when we got to the trails that the Department of Environment and Conservation had decided that this fine mountain biking day was perfect for a controlled burn off (the first there in 15 years!).
One of my dearest friends reminded me just yesterday that I had been responsible for impacting on his life some 30 years ago when, as an after dinner speaker, I had told a story which he had never ever forgotten. Flattered, but confused I confessed with absolute honesty, that I could not remember the moment and asked him to which of the many stories he referred?
Amongst the many joys of being a marketer, I have, in my time, been honoured to speak at hundreds of functions as both a support speaker and on some occasions as the keynote speaker. What a joy to discover that someone was actually listening.
There comes a time in every business where you no longer know enough to continue moving forward. The point where you have exhausted every last ounce of your ability in one or a number of areas. The time when you know that in order to take that next step, you need someone else…a consultant!
In September 1939 many would recall the Germans invaded Poland, historically marking the beginning of the Second World War. My Grandpop fought as part of the English army and was captured twice and escaped twice in El Alamein. Far from a violent man, he was a man of honour, a loving husband and father, and an exceptional carpenter. Above all else, he believed in the fight for freedom and as many mark remembrance day with there own stories, we take the time to thank the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the incredible freedom we enjoy today.
