Ahhh, yes. The spirit of Christmas. Can’t you just smell it in the air. With shopping centres in full flight with decorations and merchandise it’s hard not to notice it’s almost ‘that’ time of year again. So are you ready? Or have are you struggling to fit everything in to the last 50 days?

My Mother, Grand Mother and umteen aunts were all knitters. What confused me wasn’t the great speed with which their nimble fingers worked but what they did with all the pieces when they finally were finished. Bits shaped like a baby seal. Long skinny pieces that always seemed to be longer than anyone’s arms. Scarf like slices which could wrap up a refrigerator, all turned into a warm sweater with those grotesque patterns that brought great amusement to the local lads. Yep! Thems was the days my friend.
In part one of this series I discussed the art of planning as a life jacket to triumphing in a melt down. As a preface to that I think I need to add that it is very helpful to possess the right attitude when it comes to taking advantage of the challenge. You’ve heard it all before of course, “Think Positive and Win”; “Be a ‘Can do’ Man”; “Believe in yourself etc.”. I’ve been around a while and I’ve learned not to be sceptical about belief systems and looking forward, not back.
I am not the world’s most active person. I enjoy good food, fine wine and lazing about on a Sunday afternoon with a interesting book and a tasty snack. It’s not that I don’t exercise – I do – but my dedication to gym visits could definitely do with a little (okay, large) bolster now and then. There is one form of exercise I enjoy, actually I enjoy it so much I don’t really see it as exercise, and that is riding my bike.
As you may have heard, Jack in the box is on a mission to offset their carbon footprint. As a starting point, I’ve even resurrected my mountain bike of childhood years, which still bears the scars of many embarrassing and painful moments, for a mighty 4km ride to work on Wednesday 15th October – National Ride to Work Day. As the self-nominated researcher for this ‘green’ project, I’ve uncovered some interesting information, resources and companies all taking advantage of this emerging trend. Let me share with you some of the highlights of what I’ve uncovered.
Each week when sitting down to write my blog I stop and start about fifteen times before actually getting a whole sentence down. I know this because I have counted the amount of times I have laboured over a paragraph, a sentence, a word even, before re-reading my work and unceremoniously selecting the lot and hitting delete.
Shakespeare was a ‘rocket’! Who else could ask a crowd to “listen up” by beseeching them to “lend me your ears”? I have to confess that good old William doesn’t do much for me and despite his wonderful composition and traditional phraseology I can’t get my head around most of his communications. But I’m not a complete Philistine and I do try to get ‘savvy’ with ‘Bill’ from time to time.
